Monthly Meeting notes for October 10 2013

To all DPI-SIG members and other interested parties:

A sincere welcome to our six new members!

Mike Abercrombie, Betty Alvarez, Jenny Hays, Fred Heald, Ann Holl, and Barbara Kaplan.

Our slideshow producer, Jeff Bilyeau, presented our monthly theme photos of: “M O N O C H R O M E   M O O D” for our 111th meeting.  The slideshow included 180 images submitted by 32 members.  We gave Jeff a workout this month, but he still managed to entertain us with all the images, and his appropriate choice of music!  He uses Pro Show Gold Producer software for the slideshows.  The photos shown at the meetings will also appear on the web site’s page of slideshows.  http://www.dpi-sig.org.

MEMBERS IN THE NEWS

“Venice Canal: by Art David received an Honorable Mention from the PSA Contest.
“Ballerini” by Michelle Tricca was a full page feature in the October issue of Gulfshore Life magazine.
“Miami Boatyard” by Bob Brown was published in the November issue of Shutterbug magazine.
Jennifer Brinkman won the Loud Fireworks Photo Contest on Viewbug with 3,850 entries!  She also received a one year subscription to Squarespace, which is an awesome photo website, and a Viewbug exclusive blog interview.

ORIENTATION FOR NEW MEMBERS

Christine Cook created an IMOVIE Photo Show about DPI-SIG.  This is a great way for our new members to learn about our camera club.  Topics include DPI-SIG meetings with photos of the large group, speakers, slide shows, Roundtable & Workshop meetings, Outings, Celebrations, Competitions, Volunteer activities, relationship with the FCCC, Gallery Shows, Mentoring, etc.  This slideshow is now a YouTube presentation on our web site for ALL to see!  It’s terrific – and many thanks to Christine for her many hours of preparation for this great orientation and publicity tool for DPI-SIG.

MEMBER PRESENTATION

Larry Richardson didn’t let a little knee surgery, nine days before the meeting, stop him from presenting his refreshing mini-course in Exposure Value (EV).  He included ISO, where you should use the lowest available ISO to avoid noise; Aperture which controls the depth of field and also when you want an image to be sharp; and shutter speed when you want to slow, stop and freeze motion.  Larry’s humor always puts everyone in a good mood!

DPI-SIG COMPETITION

Richard Tindell introduced Charlie McDonald, the judge for the 2013 DPI-SIG 3nd Tri-Annual Competition.  Charlie gave his reasons why each image won a ribbon, and it mostly narrowed down to LIGHTING…of course!  There were 162 images submitted by 44 members.

OUTING NEWS

On Saturday, September 21, 2013, DPI-SIG had approximately 25 photographers usher in the sunrise at 7:03 a.m., at Harns Marsh, Fort Myers, FL.  We were privileged to see six Sandhill Cranes with some photographers getting close enough to the birds to get some great shots.  Note: Sandhill Cranes do not need microphones!

A whole big bunch of DPI-SIG photographers descended on acres and acres of sunflowers on Saturday, October 5, 2013, at Pepper Ranch, in Immokalee at zero-dark-thirty, in time for the sunrise!  It was mushy in places, but that didn’t deter anyone from venturing forth with camera & tripod in hand.  What a great experience to see all that yellow in one location!  If you missed the outing, the sunflowers are in bloom at Corkscrew Sanctuary, and can be seen from the boardwalk, with no boots needed!

Saturday, November 2, 2013, at 6:50 a.m. – 10:30 a.m., is the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk will be held at Cambier Park, with a free breakfast included.  Sign up to donate your time and photographs to this worthwhile organization.  These photos are invaluable to the American Heart Association, AHA, because they are used to give to corporate sponsors, in AHA articles, and slideshows throughout the year.    Our camera club has photographed this event for several years.

Saturday, November 9, 2013, at 8:15 a.m., photographing Kowiachobee animals.  This is a DPI-SIG tradition and service project.  This outing is LIMITED TO 30 DPI-SIG MEMBERS (no guests), who are willing to contribute their photos to the Kowiachobee Book Project.   Due to parking restrictions at Kowiachobee, we will meet at Damaris and Juan Gonzalez’s home at 8:15 am and car pool so that we are at Kowiachobee at 8:30 am.   Our outing leader is Damaris Gonzalez.    The 2014 book will be created using 2012 and 2013 photos.

Saturday, January 11, 2014, 9:00 a.m., photographing Shy Wolf Sanctuary animals, with discarded evergreen trees as backgrounds, and new animal coats. This is a DPI-SIG tradition and service project.  The photos are used to create their fundraiser calendar.    LIMITED TO 20 DPI-SIG MEMBERS (no guests), who agree to provide photos without reminders!!!!!  We have done this event for Shy Wolf for many years and it’s always a very rewarding and challenging experience.

Wednesday, February 5 and/or 6, 2014, at 9:30 a.m., photographing at the Miami Zoo; an overnight trip for some. Sunrise 7:03 a.m., sunset 6:30 p.m.  This is considered one of the best zoos to photograph because there are no fences in the way to obscure the view.

Wednesday, March 12, 2014, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 .pm., Sugden Park, Naples.  We’re hoping to photograph a family of woodpeckers, etc.  Sunset 7:35 p.m.

Tuesday, April 15, 2014, 8:00 a.m., photographing shore birds at Tigertail Beach on Marco Island.   Low tide 8:02 a.m.  Sunrise 7:02 a.m.   Dawn breaks 5:43 a.m.

Contact Ron Perkins, Outing Director, at dpi-outing@naples.net to register for the outings.

Images for the outings are posted on DPI-SIG’s web site: http://www.dpi-sig.org, Click on Member Galleries, click on Outings.  Do the same to see previous outing photos.

DPI-SIG 2ND ANNUAL HOLIDAY SOCIAL

Save the date for the 2nd Annual Holiday Social to be held on December 7, 2013, at Damaris & Juan Gonzalez home.  We’ll start the festivities at 4:00 p.m. and stay until Juan tells us to go home!  Sign up to bring a dish & drink(s) to share, and a $5 bill to cover the cost of the entertainment.  Last year, we had approximately 60 members attend and enjoy the festivities of the evening.  Bring your camera because there will be many photo opportunities with several animals from Kowiachobee Animal Preserve, including the famous iguana, Spunky.  You are welcome to bring a companion.  Don’t miss out on one of our few social events that allows us time to get to know other members.  Please RSVP our Social Director, Damaris Gonzalez, with your information: dpi-social@naples.net.

DPI-SIG ART SHOW NEWS

The DPI-SIG Art Show Committee ended its final show of 2013 at the Central Avenue Library.  The Friends of the Library were very pleased with the response from their customers who viewed our photographs.  More shows will be scheduled for 2014 with more information to follow.

There is plenty of room for new members who want to see what lighting will do to enhance their photography.  The workshops are instructed by R. L. Caron and Sonny Saunders. The monthly donation required to be involved in this group is now $15/mo., which covers the costs of studio rental and models.  If you’re interested in participating in the Studio Workshop Group, please contact the Director, Darleen Rowe to sign up. dpi-studio@naples.net.  Our focus this month will be on models.

DPI-SIG FACEBOOK PAGE: We have a Facebook page for members.  It’s a “secret page”, which means you will have to find a friend to invite you to the page.  If you don’t know a member who is on our page, contact Randi Rush Morse, gtowndazi@aol.com, and she will be your friend!  Randi is our Facebook Page Coordinator, and has generously given of her time to post announcements and get our DPI-SIG Facebook page up and running.  This is a great place to share ideas, photos, etc. with other members.  https://www.facebook.com/groups/dpisig/?fref=ts

This month’s Glossary term : “MTF DATA, MODULAR TRANSFER FUNCTION”, is the most widely used scientific method of describing lens performance. As the name suggests, a measure of the transfer of modulation (or contrast) from the subject to the image. In other words, it measures how faithfully the lens reproduces (or transfers) detail from the object to the image produced by the lens. This very accurate test yields a graph that indicates a lens contrast and sharpness both radically and tangential, with full aperture open and at f/8.  The higher the reading on the graph the better the lens. A professional lens should have a reading over 95% at 5 lines/mm in both directions and over 50% at 20 lines/mm.

Last month’s Glossary term:  “DARK FRAME NOISE REDUCTION (LONG EXPOSURE NOISE REDUCTION OPTION): A method used or offered to reduce noise when long exposures are used to capture an image. In effect, the camera takes an “extra” picture, but without actually exposing the sensor to light. The values captured during this dark frame exposure are used to subtract noise from the actual capture. Utilizing this option effectively doubles your exposure time for each image — one exposure for the picture and another exposure for noise. This in-camera noise reduction can have a significant impact in terms of reducing the noise levels in the original capture

Please check the glossary on our web site for more digital photography terms!

PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS & TRICKS

Get Creative: Explore the Times of Day By Jim Miotke and Kerry Drager
Don’t take our word for it when it comes to photographing at the right times of day. For this exercise, you get to try it yourself. Choose a nearby scene or subject. Then shoot it at different times of day. Yes, sunrise, too. You’ll discover firsthand how light changes so drastically throughout the day. And you’ll see how the quality of light varies, as well.
This assignment can be performed over a number of days. But if it’s overcast, this test won’t work to the same extent as when the sun is out. Find a scene that will get direct light as the sun goes down and when it comes up, too. For example, if tall buildings or trees block the view of a low-on-the-horizon sun, switch to a more open location.
This exercise will help train your eye to determine what a scene will look like in different light. That’s important when scouting new locations. You’ll learn that paying attention to the light will change your whole photographic life. There aren’t many photography techniques that offer guaranteed success, but routinely shooting at dynamic times of day is one of them.  Note: This tip is adapted from the book co-authored by Jim Miotke and Kerry Drager: The BetterPhoto Guide to Creative Digital Photography

Next month’s theme is: “ S T R E E T   P H O T O G R A P H Y”   Members are eligible to submit 6 pictures or a 2 minute video to:    dpi-theme@naples.net.   Please follow the procedure for renaming and resizing photos.  Refer to:  dpi-sig.org and click on “Topic of the Month”.   Please follow these guidelines:  Use your name only and the order number you want the images shown.  Title is NOT needed!  E.g., John Doe_01, John Doe_02, etc.  Please do NOT send zipped files.  If you like to plan ahead, theme topics for the entire year are listed on our web site.
