Monthly Meeting Notes for May 2014

To all DPI-SIG members and other interested parties:
A sincere welcome to our four new members!
Frank Conorozzo, Tina Cook, Inge Jungbluth, and Norman Zemel.

Our slideshow producer, Jeff Bilyeau, presented our monthly theme photos of:
” T H E E Y E S H A V E I T” for our 118th meeting. The slideshow
included 132 images submitted by 23 members. Thank you to every member who
participated. All eyes were on the projector screen for this presentation!
Jeff uses Pro Show Gold Producer software for the slideshows. The photos
shown at the meetings will also appear on the web site’s page of slideshows.
http://www.dpi-sig.org. Note: These shows require a PC type computer that
can run Pro-Show Gold software. They cannot be viewed on a Mac computer.
Check Jeff’s new workshop below on how to make slideshows (check under
Special Interest Groups).

Bob Brown encouraged members to view Issue #1 of the DPI-SIG Magazine. He
would like to have more gallery photos submitted. Issue # 2 is in the works
with plans for classified ads. Cost of ads will be announced later. Ads
must be photo related; such as tours, travel, classes, etc., and will posted
in the order received. Bob wants a clutter-free design for the ads. A ¼ or
½ page size will be available or a combo to expand an ad to ½ or full page.
To contact Bob about writing an article, submitting photos, or questions
about the ads, contact: dpi-editor@naples.net <mailto:dpi-editor@naples.net>
. And PLEASE check Issue # I on our website!

FINALLY!!! Polo shirts with our logo are available! Call SEW SHORE UNIFORMS
at (239) 774-4655, extension 03 and ask for Becky Main to order your shirt.
Price will vary depending on number of orders, but generally figure on $40
per shirt (Add $2 for 2XL and $3 for 3XL). If several members order shirts
at the same time, there will be a price break on the embroidery of the logo.
SEW SHORE UNIFORMS is located on 3845 Beck Blvd, Units 809/810, Naples FL
34114. Beck Blvd. is the extension of Davis after crossing Rt. 951 (Collier
Blvd) on the way to Cracker Barrel Restaurant. DPI-SIG will NOT be taking
orders for shirts. It’s up to members to order on their own or get together
with several members to order at once. It would be beneficial to go to the
store and try on a sample shirt to make sure of the correct size. Notice
the women’s & men’s styles.

Joe Fitzpatrick covered the topic of “Auto Focusing” and offered this
summary.
* Today’s autofocus systems are highly sophisticated.
* They can be configured for the subject you shoot, stationary or
moving.
* Changing the shutter release mode from single shot to continuous can
change the way the autofocus system operates.
* All modern DSLRs allow you to choose a focus point or let the camera
decide on a focus point.
* Advanced DSLRs have additional focus point options for specific
types of subjects.
* There are three basic autofocus shooting modes.
* One shot/AF-S acquires and locks focus when the shutter button is
half pressed.
* Al-Servo/AF-C acquires focus and continues to adjust focus if the
subject moves.
* Al-Focus/AF-A decides if the subject is moving and switches to the
appropriate mode.
* Moving the focus point is more accurate than focusing and
recomposing, especially at wide apertures.
* Focus on the eyes of people and animals.
* The focal length of the lens and the aperture determine the depth of
field.

Richard Tindell reviewed “Image Critiquing” as a method to help makers
improve their images and for the critique givers to add to their analysis
skills and depth of knowledge. He shared Christine Cook’s “The Art of
Critiquing” handout, used by the Women’s Workshop, as a guide to help keep
the critiquing process less threatening and positive. He stressed that
“When you don’t feel under attack, it is easier not to be defensive.”
Richard recommended the Women’s Workshop as a place where this is practiced.
This is also a goal of the new DPI-SIG critiquing web page. He encouraged
everyone to participate.

Richard pointed out that there are several sites on the web that discuss the
qualities of an excellent photograph and critiquing, or judging procedures.
One such site is our member R. L. Caron’s blog (rlcaronblog.com), where a
series of articles titled “Elements of a Merit Image (1-12)” that discuss
the PPAs for an award winning image. Another suggested website is 500px.com
that ranks images in several categories that can be used for both
suggestions and comparison.

Richard offered four images for the audience to critique, encouraging
participation. Besides some really good suggestions to improve images, the
atmosphere was positive and non-threatening so that creative encouragement
and a positive learning experience could be shared.

G L O S S A R Y T E R M S
This month’s Glossary term : “VARIABLE APERTURE ZOOM LENSES”: A lens in
which the aperture decreases in size as the lens is zoomed from wide-angle
to a longer focal length. These lenses are much less expensive than fixed
zoom lenses. Since most cameras use TTL metering, there is little
disadvantage except that a smaller aperture at the longest focal length
produces a longer depth of field (DOF) making it harder to produce a
background that is out of focus.
Last month’s Glossary term: “EXPOSE TO THE RIGHT”: Is a process to
achieve the best detail with the minimum amount of noise (all other things
being equal) by exposing an image as bright as possible without blowing out
highlight detail. This has to do with the logarithmic nature of how the
information is gathered by the image sensor, which translates into most of
the detail in the image being represented by the brightest pixel values. If
you think of noise as the opposite of information, a brighter exposure
translates into more light, and thus more information and less noise.
Please check the glossary on our web site for more digital photography
terms!

N E X T M O N T H ‘ S T H E M E

Next month’s theme is: ” L O S T & F O R G O T T E N” Members are
eligible to submit 6 pictures or a 2 minute video to: dpi-theme@naples.net
<mailto:dpithemepix@naples.net> . Please follow the procedure for renaming
and resizing photos. Refer to: dpi-sig.org and click on “Topic of the
Month”. Please follow these guidelines: Use your name only and the order
number you want the images shown. Title is NOT needed! E.g., John Doe_01,
John Doe_02, etc. Please do NOT send zipped files. If you like to plan
ahead, theme topics for the entire year are listed on our web site.
