Our slideshow producer, Jeff Bilyeau, presented our monthly theme photos of “A L L   A M E R I C A N” for our 108th meeting.  The slideshow included 97 images submitted by 18 members.  Jeff added poignant patriotic music that made us proud of our country.  He uses Pro Show Gold Producer software for the slideshows.  The photos shown at the meetings will also appear on the web site’s page of slideshows.  http://www.dpi-sig.org.

MEMBERS IN THE NEWS

“Rainy Day in Lucca”, by Christine Cook, has advanced to the final judging of the 5000 images from 82 countries entered in the International Fine Art Photography Competition.

ORIENTATION FOR NEW MEMBERS

Christine Cook announced that we are putting together an IMOVIE Photo Show about DPI-SIG.  It will be used to orient new members, and may occasionally be shown to others to explain about our club.  Topics will include DPI-SIG meetings with photos of the large group, speakers, slide shows, etc., Roundtable & Workshop meetings, Outings, Celebrations, Competitions, Volunteer activities, relationship with the FCCC, Gallery Shows, Mentoring, etc.  We would also use a photo of a wolf from Shy Wolf Sanctuary and/or a cat from Kowiachobee Animal Preserve that visits with members at our meetings.

If you have 2 or 3 photos at 1024 x 768 pixels maximum that illustrate any of the above, please send them to dpi-sig@naples.net.  We may not use all the photos, but would like you to send them by Monday, July 15, 2013.  We’re hoping for some images that are humorous, happy and/or expressive.  We may also use some winning images from past competitions.  If you don’t want your photos used, please let us know.  All credits will be listed at the end of the show.

ART SHOW NEWS

Nic Provenzo, Art Show Director, announced that the Exhibition at the Collier County Regional Library on Central Avenue will end on July 31 and a pickup time will be announced in a later email.  Four members have had their photos sell: Fred Bayer, Bill Coakley, Damaris Gonzalez and Betty Saunders.  This show has received a very warm reception by the patrons of the library.

Nic has also chosen photos from members depicting Florida.  Florida is celebrating its 500 years of history.  The photography will be hanging at the South Regional Library, Lely branch through July 31.  We have hanging space reserved for July 2014 at this library.  The theme will be “Italy” and it will be a juried show.  Plan ahead!

DPI-SIG COMPETITION

DPI-SIG will host its 3rd competition of 2013.  The theme for this competition is “P O R T R A I T”.

There have been questions about the theme.  A portrait is an image that displays expression, personality, and mood of the subject, usually a person or group of people.  The focus is usually the person’s face, although the entire body and the background or context may be included.  At the very least, the subject should have a face.

This is a competition and each image is judged by someone who compares your image to the other images in the group.    Remember, this competition will be judged by a portrait photographer, so submit accordingly!  The judge will make the determination based on the theme, the image and its title.  Categories include Traditional and Creative digital images from both beginner and advanced makers in color or black & white.

Submit your images from August 10 through September 11, 2013.
dpi-compete@naples.net

Instructions are on our website about sizing and titles for images.  Winners will be announced at the October meeting.

IN MEMORIAM

Laura DePamphilis has reported that our Marilyn Nagy Fund has raised $500 that she will donate in Marilyn’s name to a cancer organization.  Marilyn had been a member since 2004 and was Outing Director for several years.  She was a wonderful wife, mother, friend, and a very talented photographer who loved taking sunset pictures.  Marilyn died on March 21, 2013, at the age of 59.  A big thank you to all the members who donated to this fund.

OUTING NEWS

Saturday, November 2, 2013, is the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk held at Cambier Park.  Sign up to donate your time and photographs to this worthwhile organization.  The Heart Walk will be from 6:50 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. with a free breakfast included.  Our camera club has photographed this event for several years.

Saturday, January 11, 2014, will be another chance to photograph the animals at the Shy Wolf Sanctuary for their fundraiser calendar of 2015.  The area will be filled with discarded Christmas trees which will provide interesting backgrounds for photos.  Limited to the first 20 DPI-SIG members, no guests.  We have done this event for Shy Wolf for many years and it’s always a very rewarding and challenging experience.

Contact Ron Perkins, Outing Director, at dpi-outing@naples.net to sign up for the outings.  Images for the outings are posted on DPI-SIG’s web site: http://www.dpi-sig.org, Click on Member Galleries, click on Outings.  Do the same to see previous outing photos.

VENDOR DISCOUNT PROGRAM

Thanks to Don Fischer, Vendor Relations Coordinator, our discount program is VERY active!  We currently have 16 vendors offering discounts to our members. Watch for a new vendor coming on board with 15% discount!  For details about the program, the vendors, the available products, and how to obtain the discounts, check out our DPI-SIG Member Discount Program page on the DPI-SIG website: https://dpi-sig.org/club-activities/membership-discount-program/.  If the link doesn’t work for you, go to the DPI-SIG website (www.dpi-sig.org), click on Member Activities in the bar across the top of the page, and then select Membership Discount Program.  Don is continually working to add more vendors to the program, so regularly check the website for updates. If there’s a vendor you would like him to contact, let Don know: dpi-venco@naples.net.

DPI-SIG’s  9TH BIRTHDAY PARTY

If you didn’t attend the meeting, you missed our great 9th birthday party!  We had animals, brought by John Slaby, owner of Kowiachobee Animal Preserve, which were available for the paparazzi who remembered to bring their cameras.  The following animals were visiting for this occasion.  “Spunky” the Green Iguana; “Love Bug” the Ball Python; “Bianca” the Umbrella Cockatoo; and “Fred” the Sugar Glider.  If you didn’t get a chance to make a donation, please remember the animals and send your check to: Kowiachobee Animal Preserve, 2861 4th Avenue S. E., Naples FL 34117.  Check their website to see the additional items needed:  kowiachobee@aol.com.

And what a festive party atmosphere we had from Damaris Gonzalez, our new Social Director, heading the decorations and goodies, to say nothing of the HUGE birthday cake that was quickly devoured by the dessert-hungry crowd.  Many thanks, Damaris!  Job well done!!!

Besides the normal door prizes, we had a big basket of goodies won by a new member.  We didn’t get his name, but he looked pleased to have recouped his membership fee so quickly!

This month’s Glossary term :  “Aperture“  Measured in f-stop numbers, it is the variable opening in a lens that controls the amount f light that’s allowed to reach the image sensor, thereby affecting exposure.  A small f-stop number (i.e., f/2.8) represents a wide lens opening, which allows more light to pass through the lens to the sensor and is beneficial in low-light conditions.  A larger f-stop number (i.e., f/8.0) narrows the lens opening and allows less light to reach the sensor.  A small f-stop number (i.e., f/2.8) provides a small (narrow) depth of field, while the larger f-stop number (i.e., f/8.0) increases the depth of field.

Last month’s Glossary term:  “Dynamic Range” The difference between the highest and the lowest values in an image, as in the brightest highlights and the darkest shadows. The range of tones, from lightest to darkest, that can be recorded, displayed or reproduced by devices such as image sensors, scanners, printers and monitors.

Please check the glossary on our web site for more digital photography terms!

Next month’s theme is: “T E X T U R E”   Members are eligible to submit 6 pictures or a 2 minute video to:    dpi-theme@naples.net.   Please follow the procedure for renaming and resizing photos.  Refer to:  dpi-sig.org and click on “Topic of the Month”.   Please follow these guidelines:  Use your name only and the order number you want the images shown.  Title is NOT needed!  E.g., John Doe_01, John Doe_02, etc.  Please do NOT send zipped files.  If you like to plan ahead, theme topics for the entire year are listed on our web site.
