The photos shown at the meetings will also appear on the web site’s page of slideshows. http://www.dpi-sig.org.

A Special Thank You to our two top recruiters for DPI-SIG Naples Digital Photography Club: Peggy Farren and Warren Barber. They are always promoting our camera club and constantly referring new members to join us. Way to go Peggy & Warren!

A personal thank you to Gwen Tyler, Lorri Freedman and Teri-Ann Keene for the outstanding job they did in greeting you at the meeting and taking notes. It’s heartwarming to know volunteers are always at the ready when needed!

Speaking of volunteers, we are looking for a new Publicity Director to replace Sharon Yanish, who is in the process of moving. Many thanks to Sharon, who did an outstanding job of promoting our camera club in the various media outlets throughout Naples and the surrounding area.

CONDOLENCES: It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Marilyn Nagy, age 59, on March 21, 2013. Marilyn was a charter member who joined DPI-SIG in July, 2004. She was an active member in the club’s activities. She volunteered to be the Outing Director for several years and was always willing to help someone with her photographic skills. Marilyn was known for her outstanding Naples sunset pictures that were often posted in the Naples Daily News, on Facebook and other media outlets where she shared her images throughout the world. Marilyn will be missed by her many DPI-SIG friends.

Laura DePamphilis would like to honor Marilyn by having our club make a donation in her name to a breast cancer organization, or establish a high school scholarship to be awarded to a student who is planning on pursuing photography. Laura would like to have members’ comments and ideas. Contact Laura at: ldepam@aol.com.

OUTING NEWS:

Outing Director, Ron Perkins, reviewed the last landfill adventure outing which included 25 participants. Images are posted on DPI-SIG’s web site: http://www.dpi-sig.org, Click on Member Galleries, click on Outings.

Seminole Casino’s “2nd Annual Balloons Over Paradise Festival” is scheduled for Saturday, April 20 and Sunday, April 21, 2013, located at the Seminole Youth Ranch. Beginning at 6:00 a.m., this colorful celebration will feature more than 50 custom hot air balloons. Two early morning launches, AND a Saturday afternoon/evening Tethered Balloon Event (10 balloons) will occur. Location: 1195 State Road 29 | Immokalee, Florida 34142. DPI-SIG members may park at the casino and ride the shuttle, or may park at the grounds by making their way to the entrance off of Route 29, South of Immokalee, South of Circle K, at the blinking signage.

The renowned balloon-meister, Ms. Carol Weiner, will call for the pre-dawn glow to commence at approximately 6:00 a.m. (weather permitting). Balloon organizer, Bob Carlton, will then place on display several special shape balloons as well as the official SEMINOLE CASINO IMMOKALEE hot air balloon. As the crowds descend on the balloon field to select their prime viewing location, and to place their chairs and select their favorite balloon of the 2013 season, DPI-SIG members will be looking for that special placement of their own to take in all that surrounds.

As DPI-SiG members’ magnificent photographs indicated last year, the pre-dawn hour is simply amazing as the sun breaks over the eastern horizon, and those first glistening sunbeams bounce off the gleaming envelopes. To capture those very first images thru the lens of the camera is truly magical!

Ron explained that a special badge requirement is needed to enter as a DPI-SIG Photographer. Forms were passed out at the meeting so badges could be prepared in advance. If you missed the meeting and need a badge, contact Ron immediately at: dpi-outing@naples.net. Please return your badge to Ron Perkins or Betty Saunders at the May meeting. The Seminole Casino’s only requirement is that each participating DPI-SIG member supply them with 2 -4 of your best images to use for their marketing purposes. Email your images to: ronperkins2@me.com. If you missed this event last year, now is your chance for a fun-filled flight of fancy! Besides the balloons, there will be plenty of fun for the whole family, all day and evening…(see www.seminolecasinoevents.com).

VENDOR DISCOUNT PROGRAM:

Thanks to Don Fischer, Vendor Relations Coordinator, our discount program is VERY active! We currently have 18 vendors offering discounts to our members. For details about the program, the vendors, the available products, and how to obtain the discounts, check out our DPI-SIG Member Discount Program page on the DPI-SIG website: https://dpi-sig.org/club-activities/membership-discount-program/. If the link doesn’t work for you, go to the DPI-SIG website (www.dpi-sig.org), click on Member Activities in the bar across the top of the page, and then select Membership Discount Program. Don is continually working to add more vendors to the program, so regularly check the website for updates.

Barbara DiMattio gave a “Quick (but comprehensive) Mat/Framing Demonstration. Key points: how to measure the empty frame to make sure it is not out of square. Don’t assume it is square because it will effect everything you do thereafter, from the mat cut through to the glass cut. Use vinyl tape only to secure the photo, and secure at the top only, to allow for normal change of temperature photo movement. Have the mat wider at the bottom to avoid a tilted look. Hang your work at eye level. Use Kraft paper in back, nothing else, like shopping bags. Make sure you know if your frame is real wood or a plastic replica. Elmer’s glue for the paper back, if a wooden frame, but will not work on plastic frames. Aleene’s Tacky Glue, available at craft & hobby shops, is needed for plastic frames. Do not trim the paper backing for at least 2 hours, allowing to dry completely, which will result in a tight fit. Then, trim with a very sharp blade. Use (3) screw eyes on the back, one at dead center bottom, and the traditional ones on each side. Run the hanging wire through all the eyes in a continuous strand. As a result, when the piece is hung, the wood frame will be as strong and the glass is heavy, preventing the corners on the bottom of the frame from separating. Use single ply glass, NOT window glass. Museum quality matting is not necessary. Barb stressed that we are not pricing our pieces to reflect the talent and work involved. Here is her formula, which she feels we need to apply to avoid the huge range of prices for our exhibited pieces: Cost of materials + an hourly rate (your value) x # of hrs + (1) hour for profit = Full price

“Size Matters” was a presentation by Joe Fitzpatrick on resizing photographs.

1) Resizing photographs

Reasons to resize: too big to email; website restrictions; contest entry requirements.

2) Different formats:

TIFF vs PSD vs JPEG

3) Resizing in various options of software:

Elements vs Photoshop vs Lightroom vs Picasa

“The Lens” was a very short, fast presentation by Tim Gibbons. He told how to understand all the numbers on our lenses: (1) Distance Scale (feet lens is focused at, and minimum focus point); (2) Filter – AV, purpose; (3) Lens Serial Number for insurance purposes, found in various places on the different lenses.

The next DPI-SIG Photography Round Table discussion for members will be held on Thursday, April 18, 2013, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Location is upstairs at 5029 Tamiami Trail East in the Village Falls complex. You must make a reservation because space is limited.

Bob Levin reminded us that the instructional Photoshop Users Group (PUG), will meet at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Naples Florida, 6340 Napa Woods Way, Naples 34116, on April 24, 2013, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. This group is open to any member who has or doesn’t have Photoshop and will cover all versions of Photoshop and Elements. Bob says, “Photoshop is our darkroom!” There will be 3 classrooms this month: (1) for advanced, (1) for beginners, and (1) for Elements. Don’t be afraid to start learning Photoshop! Please bring your own laptops; there are no computers available for use. No reservation necessary; plenty of seating is available. For directions, see the map at: www.uunaples.org.

Lightroom User’s Group (LUG), will meet on Thursday, April 25, 2013, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Peggy Farren’s studio, 2383 Linwood Ave., #302. You will be receiving an email of the meeting. This discussion group is for members only and due to limited space, is on a first-come basis. Please do not respond until after you receive your email invitation.

Women’s Workshop: The next meeting is Thursday, May 2, 2013, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Crossroads Church, 1055 Pine Ridge Rd., just west of Goodlette-Frank Rd. April’s speaker was Jennifer Brinkman who spoke on “How to Capture the Feel of a Seascape”. It was loaded with beautiful examples and techniques. Members who attended will send their inspired seascapes to kms10s@aol.com for the May slide show. May’s featured speaker is Jennifer Semro who owns a pet sitting & photography business. Her topic is “Pet Photography Tips”. She will show us how to capture the animal’s personality in a photo. Remember, all DPI-SIG members are welcome to attend the workshop. Submit any questions to Christine Cook at : dpi-wwshop@naples.net.

“NEW” STUDIO WORKSHOP GROUP (SWG): DPI-SIG is excited to be forming a specialized group within our camera club that will be focusing on studio shooting and lighting. This will be a “hands on” learning experience in a fully-equipped photography studio. The workshop will be instructed by knowledgeable DPI-SIG members who will be passing on their in-depth knowledge of studio photography work. There will, in all likelihood, be a minor fee associated with this group to cover the costs of studio rental and models. However, that will be determined by the group at our introductory meeting. The studio will accommodate a large group.

Studio Workshop Director, Darleen Rowe, will be collecting names and contact information for all DPI-SIG members interested in being a part of the new Studio Workshop Group. In the next few weeks, all interested DPI-SIG members will be invited to an introductory meeting to discuss our options/costs and decide how we will move forward. Please contact Darleen Rowe at D_Rowe@live.com to sign up for this group.

This month’s Glossary term : “Blooming” When the electrons in the digital camera sensor’s pixels are exposed to large numbers of protons of light, they can overflow and contaminate adjacent pixel wells, resulting in flared halos around bright areas in the image. This compromises contrast and apparent sharpness in picture areas where darkness and highlights about each other. To avoid blooming, think twice about including light sources in your frame.

Last month’s Glossary term: ” Color Space” Every device that produces, measures, or captures color has its own way of reproducing all the colors in the visible spectrum, which is known as its color space. The most common color spaces in digital photography are Adobe RGB and (Hewlett-Packard and Microsoft) sRGB. The former has a broader color gamut (range of colors/tones), while sRGB has a smaller color gamut. There is a third color space, ProPhoto RGB, that was developed by Kodak, that’s available in post processing software that has an even broader color gamut.

Please check the glossary on our web site for more digital photography terms!

Next month’s theme is: “G R O U N D L E V E L P E R S P E C T I V E” Members are eligible to submit 6 pictures or a 2 minute video to: dpi-theme@naples.net. Please follow the procedure for renaming and resizing photos. Refer to: dpi-sig.org and click on “Topic of the Month”. Please follow these guidelines: Use your name only and the order number you want the images shown. Title is NOT needed! E.g., John Doe_01, John Doe_02, etc. Please do NOT send zipped files. If you like to plan ahead, theme topics for the entire year are listed on our web site.
