Lisa Koches – Red Lotus

April 2024 Best in Creative Category

I lived in the Wash DC area for the past 30 years and has only been in Naples for the past 3 years. I joined DPI-SIG a few weeks ago… just in time to make the competition deadline.

I miss my long time photo buddies from up North and hope to make some photo friends down here. I am a long time Nikonian and now shoot with a D810 and z9. I am headed to Portugal in the fall and hope to capture some great photos for future competitions. I am also doing another Street Photography workshop in Chicago which always yields interesting shots.

The photo I submitted was done as part of a Creative Photography class that I took a few years ago. I wanted to expand my horizons and this was an area I thought would be fun. The image started with a lovely red hibiscus that was growing in my garden. Using LR and PS I went through a series of transformations I learned in the class.

To achieve the final abstract image I went through no less than 15 steps using Photoshop filters. They included Pixelate, Twirl, Radial Blur, Blending and Flipping. The result was a geometric abstract design that bloomed from a flower!

Here is a photos taken from a workshop in White Sands NM. It was done with  https://www.craigvarjabedian.com/ who is the leading photographer in Sante Fe for this National Park and Native Americans. His portraits are stunning and provide an insight into the culture of the American West. He is the photographer in the front.

If anyone is interested in abstract and creative photography, I recommend Lori Lankford at https://www.lorilankford.com/  She is amazing and her classes are interesting and fun. I do miss her in person classes in her beautiful gardens.
