Monthly meeting notes from Noveember 8th 2012

Digital Photography and Imaging – Special Interest Group of the Naples Free-Net (Naples Digital Photography Club)

Meeting Notes of November 8, 2012

To all DPI-SIG members and other interested parties:

A sincere welcome to our six new members!

David Bankston, Cindy Cooper, Jeanne Emerick, Arden McCurdy, Ashlie Slaby, Grace Slaby.

Our slideshow producer, Jeff Bilyeau, presented our monthly theme photos of  “A   B L A S T   F R O M   T H E   P A S T”  for our 100th meeting.  Jeff reported that 17 members submitted 97 photos.  He uses Pro Show Gold Producer software for the slideshows and found nostalgic, toe-tapping tunes from yesteryear to accompany this month’s theme.  The photos shown at the meeting will also appear on the web site’s page of slideshows.  http://www.dpi-sig.org.  Another outstanding slideshow from Jeff!  It’s always fun to see how everyone interprets the monthly theme.  Remember:  think outside the box!

MEMBER IN THE NEWS:  Joe Parisi had his photo published of the sun rising over Maple Avenue and won first place prize for the magazine, The Marco Review Winter 2012/13 edition.  He also had another photo of an osprey on a no trespassing sign on Tigertail Beach published in the same issue.  Christine Cook received an honorable mention for “A Tuscany Alley” from an international online competition.

NON-PROFIT: A big thank you to the volunteers who have offered their photography services.   This is DPI-SIG’s way of giving back to our community.  Remember, you don’t have to be a professional photographer to participate in this project.  The organizations just need someone to photograph their event.  Please respond to the emails from the various organizations and also let Priscilla McGuire, Coordinator, Volunteer Photographers for Non-Profit Organizations, know when you have volunteered your services: dpi-npphoto@naples.net.

Another Non-Profit opportunity to help!  The ReCreation Tappers of Southwest Florida will perform at the Naples Tree Lighting Ceremony on 5th Ave South in front of the Christmas tree on Thursday, December 6th at 5 to 6pm. They will also dance in the holiday parade in Olde Naples on Tuesday, December 11th. Parade begins at 6pm. If any DPI-SIG photographers can be there to take pictures, the girls would appreciate it. ReC Tappers is a not-for-profit organization with dancing members ages 50s to 80s. They perform for free at club and church functions and public events. Costumes are colorful, dances are choreographed by former professionals and all dancers will be in full performance makeup. If you get good shots, please email them to Sharon Yanish at sharonah99@gmail.com or burn them to a disk, if you prefer, and give it to her at the meeting. She’s collecting photos to make into a slide show for the group at the end of the year. All photos will be forwarded to the tappers’ PR director for promotional purposes. Any questions, call Sharon at 642-2017.

A sincere thank you from Nancy Holland at the American Heart Association to the following photographers, who  participated in the Heart Walk held on November 3 in Cambier Park: Diana Calleja, Christine Cook, Damaris Gonzalez, Deborah Law, Bob Levin, Marie May Stevenson, Chuck Naumoff, Ron Perkins, Gary Schechter, Christina Skibicki, Betty Saunders, Sonny Saunders and Gwendolyn Tyler.

PARTY INVITATION: Grace Slaby announced that Kowiachobee Animal Preserve is having a birthday party for the two “baby cats” we’ve adopted! The lion and tiger cubs will be one year old on Sunday, November 18, 2012. Party is from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Must RSVP by today, Nov. 12. Peggy Farren gave a quick presentation on Using an On-Camera flash

  • Shoot with your camera in the manual setting.
  • Meter on the background to determine your camera settings. Point at the background, press the shutter 1/2way and change your F-Stop and Shutter speed until the meter is on zero.
  • Then point and focus on the people. Your flash has its own meter so should give you a good exposure on the people.  Ignore your camera meter since it is set for the background.
  • Learn to turn your Speedlight flash up and down as needed (will adjust plus 3 or minus 3 stops), while leaving it in TTL (through the lens).
  • Summary – your camera has a meter and your flash has a meter. You are smarter than your camera so you can balance the background (camera settings) with the people (flash on TTL).

Here is your homework: head to the beach around sunset.  Put your camera on manual setting, meter on background to get perfectly exposed sky.  Now, point and focus on the people.  The flash will light them up!  Still confused?  Take Peggy’s class on November 17 (see info below).

Capping off the evening with his report on Shooting the Stars outing, Larry Richardson also mentioned the next night photography shoot-out down at the Naples Pier.  He has some great plans for a unique photo experience.  More information will be following with time and date(s) from Outing Director, Ron Perkins soon!!!

This will be followed by a presentation and activity that will help us begin to explore our Personal Vision/Style in photography. (This is the “inspiration” part of the meeting.) Plan to do photo critiques and, if time permits, introduce our next topic which is shooting landscapes and seascapes. Contact Christine Cook at dpi-wwshop@naples.net, if you have questions.

This month’s Glossary term  “STOP”

Last month’s Glossary term:  “ABERRATION”

Essentially, anything in an image that is not supposed to be there. For example, optical imperfections within a lens may cause distortions such as color fringing, barrel distortion or pin cushioning.
