DPI-SIG 2ND ANNUAL HOLIDAY SOCIAL

What a party we had! The 2nd Annual Holiday Social was held on December 7, 2013, at Damaris & Juan Gonzalez home. The festivities started at 4:00 p.m. and lasted until Juan told us to go home! With everyone bringing food and/or drinks to share, we had enough food to feed the entire neighborhood! Damaris’ artsy/crafty gene took over with her handmade special name tags for everyone who registered. Many members brought their camera and took advantage of the photo opportunities with the animals from Kowiachobee Animal Preserve. Damaris said we had over 100 people at this year’s event. Many, many thanks to Damaris and Juan for all their hours of preparation, and their dedication to making DPI-SIG’s Holiday Social a roaring success. Attached are two photos from the party. Unfortunately, about 25 people missed the group photo!

To top off December’s festivities for DPI-SIG, Damaris & Juan brought cookies, candy and drinks to the meeting on Thursday night. We had a longer break to socialize and the treats were gone in a flash! Thank you, once again, to Damaris and Juan, for their never-ending contribution of time and effort in our behalf.

******************************************************************************************************************************************

Damaris also put together a grand-prize gift basket for the December meeting, which was won by Joe Fitzpatrick. Rosie Cabrera donated her handmade Christmas lamp for a door prize, which was won by Richard Tindell.

SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS

STUDIO WORKSHOP GROUP (SWG): This specialized group focuses on studio photography and lighting, and is a “hands-on” learning experience in a fully-equipped, Class A, photography studio. This group is enjoyed by novices and experienced photographers; it’s informal and fun! There is plenty of room for new members who want to see what lighting will do to enhance their photography. The workshops are instructed by R. L. Caron and Sonny Saunders. The monthly donation required to be involved in this group is now $15/mo., which covers the costs of studio rental and models. If you’re interested in participating in the Studio Workshop Group, please contact the Director, Darleen Rowe to sign up. dpi-studio@naples.net. Darlene has asked that you please RSVP for your spot in the studio 1 week prior to studio day, which is the 3rd Monday of each month.

PHOTOSHOP USERS GROUP (PUG), Due to the Christmas holiday, we will not meet this month. See you in January!

DPI-SIG PHOTOGRAPHY ROUNDTABLE, will be held on Thursday, December 19, 2013, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Location is upstairs at 5029 Tamiami Trail East in the Village Falls complex. The Roundtable is an informal and friendly gathering of club members (beginning and advanced) to talk about anything dealing with digital photography and imaging. You might have a question or two about buying a new digital camera, or you may have a new camera that you’d like to “show and tell” the group. Maybe you are having a photo-editing problem, or a computer question you’d like to get some input. Bring your questions, answers, solutions, discoveries, prints, equipment, and ideas to share with the group. The floor is OPEN to have fun and talk about anything related to digital photography in this no-pressure, congenial atmosphere. You must make a reservation because space is limited.

LIGHTROOM USERS GROUP (LUG), will not meet this month. Enjoy Christmas and we’ll see you next month!

WOMEN’S WORKSHOP: The next meeting is Thursday, January 2, 2014, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Crossroads Church, 1055 Pine Ridge Rd., just west of Goodlette-Frank Rd. January’s topic is HDR, or High Dynamic Range with Christine Cook and Bob Kenedi demonstrating the use of HDR, especially with landscapes, to create wider tonal range and depth in your images, for realistic or creative looks. Come and see how these techniques can be used to put the WOW in your images. HOMEWORK: Don’t forget to send your resized images using effective color schemes to dpi-wwshop@naples.net for the Color slide show; send up to 4 images by Jan. 30th. . Please include a brief note revealing which part of the color wheel you think you used, which will be very informative for other members. Also, please send images for critique – be sure to specify “critique” in the subject line. Size images 1024 by 768 and send to Christine Cook at dpi-wwshop@naples.net No reservation needed.

DPI-SIG LIBRARY: We now have over 100 items in our DPI-SIG Members’ Photography Training Library. If you have any photography training CD’s or DVD’s that you are no longer using and would like to donate to the DPI-SIG Members Library, please send an email to dpi-library@naples.net and we will arrange to pick them up. Go to the website and check the list of available instructional media available to members. Your selection will be delivered to you at the next monthly meeting.

DPI-SIG FACEBOOK PAGE: We have a Facebook page for members. It’s a “secret page”, which means you will have to find a friend to invite you to the page. If you don’t know a member who is on our page, contact Randi Rush Morse, gtowndazi@aol.com, and she will be your friend! Randi is our Facebook Page Coordinator, and has generously given of her time to post announcements and get our DPI-SIG Facebook page up and running. This is a great place to share ideas, photos, etc. with other members. https://www.facebook.com/groups/dpisig/?fref=ts

This month’s Glossary term : “BANDING” Loss of image quality caused by expanding the tonal range of an image during post processing. Primarily occurs when expanding underexposed images. Occurs most often with JPEG images as they have less tonal information, but can also occur with RAW images. Possible solutions include the introduction of dithering in the post processing or increasing the number of bits per color channel.

Last month’s Glossary term: “ASPHERIC LENS” Lens elements that are not sphere-shaped. Instead of having an arc-shaped concave or convex front or back surface they are not sphere-shaped. They are designed to spread light more evenly to the corners of the frame. The asphere’s more complex surface profile can reduce or eliminate spherical aberration and also reduce other optical aberrations compared to a simple lens. A single aspheric lens can often replace a much more complex multi-lens system. The resulting device is smaller and lighter, and sometimes cheaper than the multi-lens design. These lenses elements are usually used to control aberrations or distortions in ultra-wide angle and large-aperture lenses. In photography, a lens assembly that includes an aspheric element is often called an aspherical lens.

Please check the glossary on our web site for more digital photography terms!

Next month’s theme is: “ G o I n g A r o u n d I n C I r c l e s” Members are eligible to submit 6 pictures or a 2 minute video to: dpi-theme@naples.net. Please follow the procedure for renaming and resizing photos. Refer to: dpi-sig.org and click on “Topic of the Month”. Please follow these guidelines: Use your name only and the order number you want the images shown. Title is NOT needed! E.g., John Doe_01, John Doe_02, etc. Please do NOT send zipped files. If you like to plan ahead, theme topics for the entire year are listed on our web site.
