Meeting Notes for August 8th 2013

To all DPI-SIG members and other interested parties:

A sincere welcome to our three new members!
Myron Fouratt, Dee Richardson, and Ellen Warnick

Our slideshow producer, Jeff Bilyeau, presented our monthly theme photos of “T E X T U R E” for our 109th meeting. The slideshow included 154 images submitted by 27 members. We gave Jeff a workout this month! Notice how many people are toe-tapping to the always appropriate music that Jeff finds for the slideshows. He uses Pro Show Gold Producer software for the slideshows. The photos shown at the meetings will also appear on the web site’s page of slideshows. http://www.dpi-sig.org.

MEMBERS IN THE NEWS

Dennis Goodman’s “Deadly Reflection” and Nic Provenzo’s “Ladder, Wynwood Wall” pictures are featured in the exhibit Camera USA, currently hanging at The von Liebig Art Center. They were also both published in the Life in Naples magazine, Aug/Sept/Oct 2013 issue.

In addition, Nic was accepted to show images at Suenos Americanos Exhibition at the former Federal Penitentiary, now known as The Workhouse Center for the Arts, in Washington D.C.

Val Brill had her photo “Swallowtail Beauty” published in the Photography for Beginners magazine.

Many thanks to Joe Fitzpatrick for volunteering to be our Meeting Photographer. And a sincere thank you to Tim Gibbons for his many years of volunteer service as Meeting Photographer in the past.

Orientation for New Members: Christine Cook has been busy putting together an IMOVIE Photo Show about DPI-SIG. It will be used to orient new members, and may occasionally be shown to others to explain about our club. Topics will include DPI-SIG meetings with photos of the large group, speakers, slide shows, etc., Roundtable & Workshop meetings, Outings, Celebrations, Competitions, Volunteer activities, relationship with the FCCC, Gallery Shows, Mentoring, etc. We look forward to seeing the results of this project.

Les Ford had several good ”Suggestions for an Arizona/Utah Photo Trips” for photographers who travel to the National Parks. He visited the many parks in Arizona and Utah area, and because of all the hiking, wished he had taken the trip when he was much younger! He ended up using his monopod as a walking stick, was sorry he took so much equipment that got heavier as the day wore on, and wasn’t impressed riding a donkey that close to the edge of the cliffs! Les also wished he had made arrangements to take more time for the trip, instead of cramming everything he wanted to see in just two weeks.

“BEING PREPARED” was the topic for Larry Richardson’s presentation. If you know Larry, you only have to remember his photo vest and recall what he carries to be prepared for that shot of a lifetime. He carries 2 or 3 lenses, and all the other photographic accouterments needed to make his photo shoot easy. He’s always at the ready whether he’s working in the field or leading a group of photography enthusiasts. He reminded us to always carry a camera, whether it’s an SLR or a Point & Shoot type. A camera in the trunk of your car will not be immediately available when you come across a photo you wish to stop and take. Keeping your camera close at hand, like on the passenger seat if you’re alone in the car, will definitely help you grab the shot. Having a routine, and knowing where all your equipment is located for fast retrieval, calls upon your “memory muscles”. Thank you, Larry, for these basic reminders that we all tend to forget over time.

FCCC 2nd TRI-ANNUAL DIGITAL COMPETITION OF 2013

Christine Cook distributed the award ribbons for the FCCC 2nd Tri-Annual Digital Competition of 2013. The competition had 665 entries from 168 makers who were from 26 clubs. DPI-SIG won 32 ribbons, 4.8% of the total. Great job DPI-SIG digital photographers! Congratulations to the winners!

ART SHOW NEWS

Art David, member of the Art Show Committee, announced the next Exhibition at the Naples Regional Library on Central Avenue. Intake for your images will be on Tuesday, September 3, 2013, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. A reception will be held on Wednesday, September 4, 2013, from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m., with food again being furnished by Costco. The exhibition will be hanging through September 30 2013. The Art Show Committee has formulated some new rules and regulations for members to participate in the DPI-SIG Art Shows. A separate email will be sent next week to members explaining the changes.

DPI-SIG COMPETITION

DPI-SIG will host its 3rd competition of 2013. The theme for this competition is “P O R T R A I T”.

There have been questions about the theme. A portrait is an image that displays expression, personality, and mood of the subject, usually a person or group of people. The focus is usually the person’s face, although the entire body and the background or context may be included. At the very least, the subject should have a face!

Remember, this is a competition, and each image is judged by a judge, who compares your image to the other images in the group. This particular competition will be judged by Charlie McDonald, an international portrait photographer. The judge will make the determination based on the theme, the image and its title. Categories include Traditional and Creative digital images from both beginner and advanced makers in color or black & white.

Submit your images from August 10 through September 11, 2013. dpi-compete@naples.net

Instructions are on our website about sizing and titles for images. Winners will be announced at the October meeting.

IN MEMORIAM

Laura DePamphilis has reported that our Marilyn Nagy Fund, which raised $500 from our membership, will be donated to The Cancer Alliance of Naples, as per the request of her family. Marilyn had been a member since 2004 and was Outing Director for several years. She was a wonderful wife, mother, friend, and a very talented photographer who loved taking sunset pictures. Marilyn died on March 21, 2013, at the age of 59. A sincere thank you to all the members who donated to this fund.

OUTING NEWS

The Perseid Meteor Shower, best of the year, can be viewed on August 11 – 13. You can expect as many as 100 meteors per hour. Look about half-way into the northeast section of the nighttime sky. The best times are between midnight and 4:30 a.m. Google “photographing meteor showers” for some instructions. A separate email was sent to members with directions to the sites. We were guests of the Everglades Astronomical Society of Naples for this outing.

If you missed the outing to Gallery 152, a printing business & gallery, owned by members Rhea Nichols and Dennis Goodman, they are offering a 20% discount to DPI-SIG members for one gallery wrapped canvas 12 x 18” or larger. The discount will expire August 31, 2013.

Saturday, November 2, 2013, is the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk held at Cambier Park. Sign up to donate your time and photographs to this worthwhile organization. The Heart Walk will be from 6:50 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. with a free breakfast included. Our camera club has photographed this event for several years.

Saturday, January 11, 2014, will be another chance to photograph the animals at the Shy Wolf Sanctuary for their fundraiser calendar of 2015. The area will be filled with discarded Christmas trees which will provide interesting backgrounds for photos. Limited to the first 20 DPI-SIG members, no guests. We have done this event for Shy Wolf for many years and it’s always a very rewarding and challenging experience.

Contact Ron Perkins, Outing Director, at dpi-outing@naples.net to sign up for the outings. Images for the outings are posted on DPI-SIG’s web site: http://www.dpi-sig.org, Click on Member Galleries, click on Outings. Do the same to see previous outing photos.

VENDOR DISCOUNT PROGRAM

Thanks to Don Fischer, Vendor Relations Coordinator, our discount program is VERY active! We currently have 19 vendors offering discounts to our members. The two new vendors offering discounts are Expo Imaging and Photobacks. For details about the program, the vendors, the available products, and how to obtain the discounts, check out our DPI-SIG Member Discount Program page on the DPI-SIG website: https://dpi-sig.org/club-activities/membership-discount-program/. If the link doesn’t work for you, go to the DPI-SIG website (www.dpi-sig.org), click on Member Activities in the bar across the top of the page, and then select Membership Discount Program. Don is continually working to add more vendors to the program, so regularly check the website for updates. If there’s a vendor you would like him to contact, let Don know: dpi-venco@naples.net. Members were given a sample Rogue Flash Gel from Expo Imaging at this month’s meeting. They also gave a grand door prize of Rogue Photographic Design “Flash Benders” software which was won by Eric Hansen.

SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS

DPI-SIG PHOTOGRAPHY ROUNDTABLE, a discussion group for members, will be held on Thursday, August 15, 2013, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Location is upstairs at 5029 Tamiami Trail East in the Village Falls complex. You must make a reservation because space is limited.

STUDIO WORKSHOP GROUP (SWG): This group will meet on Monday, August 19, 2013. DPI-SIG has a specialized group within our Club that focuses on studio photography and lighting. This is a “hands-on” learning experience in a fully-equipped photography studio. This group is enjoyed by novices and experienced photographers; it’s informal and fun! There is plenty of room for new members who want to see what lighting will do to enhance their photography. The workshops are instructed by R. L. Caron and Sonny Saunders. There is a minor monthly donation required to be involved in this group, which covers the costs of studio rental and models. If you’re interested in participating in the Studio Workshop Group, please contact the Director, Darleen Rowe to sign up. dpi-studio@naples.net. Our focus this month will be on products and animals.

PHOTOSHOP USERS GROUP (PUG), will meet on Wednesday, August 21, 2013, at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Naples Florida, 6340 Napa Woods Way, Naples 34116, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. This group is open to any member who has or doesn’t have Photoshop and will cover all versions of Photoshop and Elements. There are 3 classrooms available each month: (1) for advanced, (1) for beginners, and (1) for Elements. Don’t be afraid to start learning Photoshop! Please bring your own laptops; there are no computers available for use. No reservation necessary; plenty of seating is available. For directions, see the map at: www.uunaples.org.

LIGHTROOM USERS GROUP (LUG), will meet on Thursday, August 22, 2013, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Understand Photography (Peggy Farren’s studio) 2383 Linwood Ave., #302. You will be receiving an email of the meeting. This discussion group is for members only and due to limited space, is on a first-come basis. Please do not respond until after you receive your email invitation.

WOMEN’S WORKSHOP: The next meeting is Thursday, September 5, 2013, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Crossroads Church, 1055 Pine Ridge Rd., just west of Goodlette-Frank Rd. We will demonstrate the use of layers in Photoshop. Plug-ins will be featured at the October meeting. For “homework”, please send a before and after picture of an image enhanced with Photoshop in any way. Include a short bulleted list of the key steps you used. If you already submitted this, you are more than welcome to do so with another image. It is a great learning experience for everyone. No reservation needed.

DPI-SIG LIBRARY: We now have over 100 items in our DPI-SIG Members’ Photography Training Library. If you have any photography training CD’s or DVD’s that you are no longer using and would like to donate to the DPI-SIG Members Library, please send an email to dpi-library@naples.net and we will arrange to pick them up. Go to the web site and check the list of available instructional media available to members.

SPECIAL LIGHTROOM IMPORTING WORKSHOP: If you are a new Adobe Lightroom user, or are thinking about trying Lightroom, or just need a little help importing your images, let us know. Importing images with Lightroom is very simple, but there are so many importing features available, determining where you want to place your image files, automatically backing up your images, adding your name to each image, applying preset corrections or copyright information to each image, and more, that it looks complicated. If there are enough members interested, we will offer a special Lightroom Importing workshop. Let us know if you are interested by replying to dpi-sig@naples.net.

This month’s Glossary term : “INTERNAL FOCUSING” An internal focusing (IF) lens focuses by shifting selected lens elements within and independent of the lens outer barrel. The lens’ barrel does not change length when the lens is focused. If lenses are generally smaller and closer focusing than non-IF lenses and require less power since the focus motor does not have to move the lens barrel. IF lenses are well suited where lens-mounted accessories are used.

Last month’s Glossary term: “APERTURE“ Measured in f-stop numbers, it is the variable opening in a lens that controls the amount f light that’s allowed to reach the image sensor, thereby affecting exposure. A small f-stop number (i.e., f/2.8) represents a wide lens opening, which allows more light to pass through the lens to the sensor and is beneficial in low-light conditions. A larger f-stop number (i.e., f/8.0) narrows the lens opening and allows less light to reach the sensor. A small f-stop number (i.e., f/2.8) provides a small (narrow) depth of field, while the larger f-stop number (i.e., f/8.0) increases the depth of field.

Please check the glossary on our web site for more digital photography terms!

Next month’s theme is: “A B U R S T O F C O L O R” Members are eligible to submit 6 pictures or a 2 minute video to: dpi-theme@naples.net. Please follow the procedure for renaming and resizing photos. Refer to: dpi-sig.org and click on “Topic of the Month”. Please follow these guidelines: Use your name only and the order number you want the images shown. Title is NOT needed! E.g., John Doe_01, John Doe_02, etc. Please do NOT send zipped files. If you like to plan ahead, theme topics for the entire year are listed on our web site.
