“Photographing Butterflies” was the presentation given by Christine Cook.  Over the years, she has volunteered at Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary and Naples Botanical Garden, which has given her invaluable information about photographing butterflies.

The butterfly’s erratic flight is the defense mechanism for this delicate but hardy insect.  The butterfly has long wings and a small head and is motionless when the climate is cool.  While the butterfly isn’t camera shy, it is sensitive to motion.  It has many predators, but its antennae and proboscis pick up smells easily.  A photographer needs to know which plants attract the butterfly: Milkweed, Dutchman’s Pipe, Passion Vine, just to name a few.

Camera Settings: Zoom or macro; fast shutter (250 – 1600+); ISO at 400 or lower; tripod (if permitted); cable release; continuous shooting.

Focus: on the “face” of the butterfly.

Wait for It: Don’t chase a butterfly!  Eventually it will come back to the same flower.  Patience!

Habitat: Know what to look for with the various flowering & colorful plants that attract butterflies.

Vary It: Moths are beautiful, too!

NOTE: Due to time constraints, Joe Fitzpatrick wasn’t able to give his presentation.  He’ll be scheduled for the May 8th meeting.

D P I – S I G   2nd  C O M P E T I T I O N of 2014

The Second 2014 DPI-SIG Competition is underway!  Each member may enter four (4) images captured within the past 5 years in any combination of Color and Monochrome in each competition as an an Advanced Image, Beginning Image, or a Creative Image. By entering you give DIP-SIG permission to post images on the web, but you retain full copyrights.

There has been a change from last year based on the images received – Creative Images, both color and monochrome, will be together in one category and all submissions will be considered as a group (no distinction between Beginners and Advanced Makers). This will allow more entries to receive ribbons.

In 2014 we have 5 categories for each competition. Beginner Color, Beginner Monotone, Advanced Color, Advance Monotone and Creative.

The second competition is called “My Florida” –  Submissions  April 10 thru May 8, 2014.

map for competition 2

Images, including pictures of people or objects, must express a sense of place, portraying distinctive features of Southwest Florida. The suggested geographical limitation is Sarasota and points south, east to the lake (around SR 27) and the Everglades. As long as the image is somehow linked to SW Florida, it’s fair game.

Remember to remove your name from being displayed on your image. Resize the image to fit 1024 pixels wide and 768 pixels high window and save as a JPEG. Rename the images to the new competition format that includes the category code – for example “atc FRESH TULIPS by John Doe.jpg” as explained on the web site. Email your images as attachments to: dpi-compete@naples.net

DPI-SIG has a pretty flexible approach and that extends to the competitions. It is up to the Maker to determine what image to submit and what image they believe a judge will think is both appropriate and superior in the competition.

Here is a copy of the DPI-SIG guidelines at-a-glance as a reminder.

G L O S S A R Y   T E R M S

This month’s Glossary term :  “EXPOSE TO THE RIGHT”Is a process to achieve the best detail with the minimum amount of noise (all other things being equal) by exposing an image as bright as possible without blowing out highlight detail. This has to do with the logarithmic nature of how the information is gathered by the image sensor, which translates into most of the detail in the image being represented by the brightest pixel values. If you think of noise as the opposite of information, a brighter exposure translates into more light, and thus more information and less noise.

Last month’s Glossary term:  “BACK-ILLUMINATED SENSOR” (Backside Illumination (BSI or BI) sensor is a digital image sensor arranging the imaging elements to increase the amount of light captured and improve low-light performance. A traditional, front-illuminated digital camera sensor consists of a matrix constructed in a fashion similar to the human eye, with a lens in front, wiring in the middle, and the photo detector at the back. In this arrangement the lens and wiring reflect some of the light and the photo detector only receives the remainder incoming light, thus reducing the signal that is captured. A back-illuminated sensor contains the same elements, but orients the wiring behind the photo detector so that light can strike the photocathode layer without passing through the wiring layer. This change can improve the photo detector performance about 60% to over 90%.

Please check the glossary on our web site for more digital photography terms!
